In the United States, the activity “show and tell”, is a quintessential part of education as it gives children a break from learning and a chance to have fun. In order to participate in this activity, a child will bring one of his or her favorite items to discuss with the class. Every object that a student brings to class has a story behind it. The children are given a chance to explain why they chose that particular item, where they got it, and other relevant information.

Show and tell has been commonly implemented in education for its many benefits. First, show and tell is an activity that boosts communication skills. Children are encouraged to speak up and explain what they love about their possessions. Children have to think about the answers for questions such as “How does it work?” or “Why do you like it?” By actively demonstrating an object, kids will be more comfortable with public speaking as they grow up. Show and tell also helps build confidence and pride. A child may bring a favorite toy, a drawing, or a stuffed animal in class; so, they need a lot of confidence to express their thoughts about that object. Being the center of attention gives a child a boost in self-esteem. Moreover, the amusement from the classmates makes the kids feel more valued among their peers. Lastly, the environment of show and tell educates children the importance of social skills. As a speaker, the child learns how to speak loud and clear, and how to use proper gestures to get the best attention out of the audience. As a listener, the child learns how to respect the presenter by listening to their activity attentively and most importantly, how to be supportive. The discipline and mutual respect for others can be strengthened through this process, as well as the friendship between classmates.

Show and tell is not only the exercise that prepares children for future presentations - it’s an activity that encourages children to proudly express their true selves, what they love, and what they value. Through show and tell, classmates get to know each other better which can form a meaningful friendship. With that being said, parents and teachers should definitely encourage children to get involved in these activities.
SPECIAL NOTE: Our team had recently opened an Indiegogo Campaign for "Show and Tell." It would mean so much to us if you could provide feedback and contribute to our project. The donations go straight to the funds needed to make this film come to life. Please visit our campaign at
